African Union

   September 9, 1999 at the initiative of Muammar Gaddafi during a meeting of African Heads of States in Sirte (Libya) has been established Organization of African Unity (OAU), which brings together 53 countries in Africa. This organization July 9, 2002 has been officially transformed into the African Union.

   Chairperson of the African Union shall be elected for a year a head of the African States. Administration of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

   The objectives of the African Union are:

         Fostering the political and socio-economic integration of the continent;

         To promote and protect the interests of the continent and its people;

         Peace and security in Africa;

         The promotion of democratic institutions, wise leadership and human rights.

   The African Union is not part of Morocco - in protest against the adoption of its membership of Western Sahara, which Morocco considers its territory.
